History of Baraga County Federal Credit Union

Ford L'Anse Employees Federal Credit Union started in the living room of Graydon R. and Marcelline Newland on February 29, 1952. The charter was applied for by members of the United Auto Workers Local 958. Charter members included: William A. Haanpaa, Eugene J. Racette, Alf A. Jentoft, George P. Williams, Graydon R. Newland, John F. Oleskie, and Leo Harrington.

At that time the membership was limited to those having a common bond of association, occupation, or residence of L'Anse, with having to be within a 10 mile radius of the Post Office. On November 20, 1964 the charter was amended to include "persons living or working in Baraga County and organizations of such persons". At which time the name was changed to L'Anse-Baraga Community Federal Credit Union.

In October 1968, the name changed, to what we are known today as, the Baraga County Federal Credit Union. Membership is open to persons who live or work in Baraga County and their relatives.

On January 1, 2008, we purchased The Green House land and building from Karl Presslein. U.P. Engineers & Architects, Inc. of Houghton was hired to help us plan and build an addition to our existing building, nearly doubling the size of the facility. After the demolition of the old Green House building in the spring, groundbreaking for the new building was on September 4, 2008; Moyle Construction began work immediately. Mechanical and electrical work, as well as painting, was contracted out locally.

The building was completed in March of 2009. The modern facility resembles a lighthouse, complete with a cupola to bring more light into the lobby. To better serve our members, we expanded our office and storage space, created an additional drive thru, and increased the size of our lobby. The lobby offers a coffee bar for our members and plenty of seating near the fireplace. The new building also has a new Drive-up ATM on the south side of the building.
