CREDIT UNIONS
ARE SAFE AND STRONG

Headlines lately point toward large banks that are failing and claiming bankruptcy.  Where is your money safe?  Your Credit Union!  There are many reasons why credit unions are not having the financial difficulty the large corporate banks are dealing with today.  Two major reasons are:

  • Credit unions operate more conservatively; those that lend mortgages hold the majority in portfolio rather than selling them on the secondary market to companies such as Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.1
  • Credit unions are owned by their members; not stock holders whose primary objective is profit.  Member service is our first priority.

Federally insured credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), which is administered by the National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government.  In short, NCUSIF can be compared to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation), which insures banks.  The NCUSIF and FDIC are each backed by the "full faith and credit" of the U.S. Treasury.  Remember, insurance is calculated separately for each federally insured credit union or bank.

For credit union members that have further questions, the NCUA has insurance experts available for questions concerning levels of insurance.  The NCUA Insurance Call Center is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 6:30pm, at 1-800-755-1030, extension 1.  You may also visit them on the web at http://www.ncua.gov/ShareInsurance/index.htm

REMINDER!!!
Phishing scams are only getting more prevalent and complex.  Recently, Credit Unions have reported a phishing scam using an automated telephone service.

Many Credit Union Websites have also been subject to illegal phishing emails. These emails have been sent to Credit Union members and non-members to collect their account information (user names, passwords, etc.).  Please DO NOT click on the Website link, call any phone numbers, or respond to any automated systems that tell you the Credit Union's information is out of date and you need to update or complete.  Please contact the Credit Union if you are a victim of this illegal phishing at
(906)524-6151 or (906)353-8833.
We call our Fraud Service Center that analyzes VISA and Debit Mastercard transactions Falcon.  If they contact you, they may need to verify your identity.  The only information they will ask you for is birthdate and/or the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number.  If a contact asks for more information than the above, do not release any information and call the Credit Union as soon as possible.

Moving right along...

We are scheduled to move into the new part of our building in early December, which is where our new teller area, drive up, and walk up will be.  Construction will continue into spring until the old building is remodeled and everything is brought together.

WORK HAS BEGUN!  Groundbreaking was
September 4, 2008.
Pictured above are: Credit Union Board Members, Management,
UPEA Staff, Contractors, and Village Manager.    Our new building will be completed in Spring 2009.  Photo courtesy of the L'Anse Sentinel.

Moyle Construction began work Monday, September 8, 2008.  Mechanical and electrical work, as well as painting, will be contracted out locally.

The addition will be approximately 2542 sq. ft. for a total of 4385 sq. ft.

Update July 30, 2008:
Plans are finalized; bids are in process.

Update March 2008:
The Green House was torn down Saturday, March 15 by
Dave Whitman Construction.
Planning is underway.

On January 1, 2008, we purchased The Green House land and building
from Karl Presslein.
U.P. Engineering has been hired to help us plan and build an addition to our existing building.  We plan to expand our office and storage space, create an additional drive thru, and increase the size of our lobby to better serve our members.

We are very excited about this
expansion, as we have long
outgrown the walls we're in.

 PHONE AND DATA CIRCUIT OUTAGES:
Complaint to the FCC
October 9, 2006

In recent years the Upper Peninsula has suffered major power outages with interruptions to voice and data services provided by the giant telecommunications companies that control the regional infrastructure.  Such interruptions make it difficult for both residential and business customers.  We all depend on these circuits for our daily routine.

These outages point out a need for "circular redundancy" in major circuits to the region.  Without this redundancy, communications are vulnerable to massive failure with the loss of a single control point. As a matter of public safety and the economc well-being of users, the companies that provide these services must be held accountable to the public for an alternate path to the outside world.

Baraga County Federal Credit Union encourages residents of the U.P. to file a
complaint with the FCC
whenever long day outages occur, such as the outage on October 2, 2006, which lasted from 12 noon to 11:15 p.m.  General complaints may be filed online, by the postal services, fax, or email at fccinfo@fcc.gov.
